Classics are long boring stories that no one under the age of 35 likes to read. However there is an exception, classic short stories. They are short, simple and sweet. One of the best short stories that I have read is The Gift of The Magi. By O'Henry. The Gift of The Magi is a realistic fiction story, about a poor couple set in an urban environment in the early 20th century. But, the couple have two valuable possessions; Jim's Watch, an heirloom, and Della's hair, long and fine, the envy of any wigmaker. Della wants to buy a nice gift, but has very little money to spend. So she sells her hair to buy a watch-chain for Jim, while Jim sells his watch to by some fancy hair combs for Della. In the end they both have completely useless gifts. I learned from this passage that when giving a gift, its the thought that counts. The author wanted to convey the message that giving gifts for loved ones was foolish and the greatest gift you can give someone is the thought.
